Wesclin Seniors: Signing to Play

By: Jacqueline Oelrich

Many seniors at Wesclin High School have signed to play a sport next year at a college or university.  About 15 students have already signed or are planning to sign with a school to continue their athletic career. Sports students plan to continue include: football, volleyball, basketball, baseball, softball, track and field, and trapshooting.  The schools include Southwestern Illinois College, Kaskaskia College, McKendree University, Lindenwood University in Belleville, Webster University, Greenville College, and Culver-Stockton College. Senior Mayghen Mugele is playing both volleyball and basketball next year at Webster University and said, “I’m really excited to continue not one but two of my favorite sports during college.  Both coaches are extremely nice, and I look forward to giving them my all. Volleyball and basketball have shaped who I am as a person, and I am fortunate enough to continue on with both.”  Senior Chris Cornwall said, “I am very honored and excited to be continuing my football career at Culver Stockton College. Playing college football has always been my dream, and I hope to represent Wesclin well at the next level. The thing I am most excited for is attending the same college as my brother, Michael, who will be on the track team. It will be awesome to be able to continue to motivate and push each other through sports.” The Wesclin class of 2016 has had the most seniors planning to continue their athletic careers beyond high school, and the Wesclin athletic programs are the foundation of these athlete’s skill sets.
